Emergency Medicine

Emergency medicine (EM) is a field of practice based on the knowledge and skills required for the prevention, diagnosis and management of acute and urgent aspects of illness and injury affecting patients of all age groups with a full spectrum of episodic undifferentiated physical and behavioural disorders; it further encompasses an understanding of the development of prehospital and inhospital emergency medical systems and the skills necessary for this development.

With over 8,717 beds across 54 hospitals in India and overseas, Apollo Hospitals is the largest private corporate group of hospitals in Asia. Started in 1983, Apollo Hospitals now consists of national & international chain of hospitals, pharmacies, diagnostic centres, health insurance, clinical research & medical BPO services. Apollo Hospitals is the first to promote the specialty of emergency medicine across all of its hospitals.

Emergency Medicine (EM) is one of the fastest evolving specialty around the world. Over the last decade EM in India has evolved from casualty to emergency departments, from transport vehicles to ambulances, from Casualty Medical Officers to Consultants in Emergency Medicine. The Medical Council of India (MCI) recognised EM as a specialty in Aug 2009.

EM is an established specialty by itself and has gained importance in view of being a very crucial link to community. It also has high impact on patient satisfaction, mortality and morbidity of patients. Apollo Hospitals identified this huge gap in Indian healthcare delivery system in late 90's and has been committed to excellence in this area. It has played a pioneering role in laying down foundation of EM in India.

The historical global data on EM and the disease burden in India is blatantly pointing toward an exponential increase in ED visits. The existing Apollo data also strongly supports this.

Apollo Hospitals is uniquely set to leverage its vast expanse of health facilities with over 50 emergency departments (ED) of various levels, ED bed strength of more than 300 and a fleet of 125 ambulances. It also has created its own leadership in this arena and continues to invest in future of EM by investing in training, infrastructure and promoting leadership.
